Legal Assistants
Crowe & Dunlevy's Legal Assistants (paralegals) are highly trained and skilled professionals who are integral members of the legal services team. It is a tribute to the working environment that a quarter of the Legal Assistants have been employed at Crowe & Dunlevy for more than 20 years. Legal Assistants are assigned to Firm practice areas depending on education, training and experience. The Firm currently employs Legal Assistants in the areas of general litigation, oil and gas litigation, corporate, labor, probate, bankruptcy, intellectual property, aircraft, and appellate practice.
Crowe & Dunlevy looks for candidates with a suitable combination of credentials, experience and temperament to handle assignments independently while contributing to the overall team effort in providing legal services. Each Legal Assistant is assigned to a supervising attorney and works for a designated group of attorneys. Although most assignments may come from this group of attorneys, all Legal Assistants help each other and other attorneys as needed. Typical tasks include drafting pleadings, estate documents, trademark applications, corporate audit reports and other corporate documents; handling discovery matters such as producing documents, preparing subpoenas, drafting discovery answers and summarizing depositions; drafting witness and exhibit lists, working with witnesses and assisting at trial; and drafting initial appellate documents and assisting with filing of appellate briefs.
Legal Assistants are also proficient in the use of technology as it relates to their particular practice area. For instance, Litigation Legal Assistants are well-versed in the use of databases, imaging software, spreadsheets, legal research databases, and, when necessary, they coordinate in-house litigation support with outside vendors; Corporate Legal Assistants use income tax software, spreadsheets and prepare PowerPoint presentations; Probate Legal Assistants utilize estate valuation and tax return software; and Intellectual Property Legal Assistants use a specially designed database to manage deadlines and case information as well as patent drawing software.
Crowe & Dunlevy evaluates candidates for employment as Legal Assistants based on their education and experience. The Firm prefers candidates with a Bachelor's degree and a minimum of two years of legal experience; however, it will consider an applicant with a combination of college courses, a certificate from an ABA approved legal assistant program, and legal experience. Legal Assistants are exempt employees who are expected to be able to work independently with a minimum of supervision.
