OKLAHOMA CITY – Some of Oklahoma’s largest companies and universities are grabbing up the rights to Web addresses in the newly opened .xxx domain to protect their trademarked brands from being reserved by cyber-squatters and pornography websites.

“Like a lot of companies and schools, they want to control how their mark is used in the marketplace to the extent that it could be used for some sort of objectionable site they don’t want or approve of,” said Drew Palmer, an Oklahoma City attorney for Crowe & Dunlevy who specializes in intellectual property issues.

Companies and other institutions that have federally registered trademarks could have elected to reserve their .xxx domain names before Florida-based ICM Registry opened up the domain for sale to the public earlier this month, but otherwise had to scramble to purchase the domains once .xxx went live.

“This is just another right that a federally administered trademark gives you,” Palmer said. “An ounce of prevention upfront can pay off dividends in the end.
