Five bucks is chump change in our current world. And yet seldom has so much venom been unleashed by such a modest amount, which happens to be the monthly homage Bank of America determined that it would begin charging its customers next year monthly to use the bank’s debit card. Nothing illegal about this. Yet just last week in a sampling of op-ed pieces in national dailies, this fee was almost mockingly described as robbery, a dunderheaded plan and a step that would ruin banking relationships. While BOA’s announcement may not have been the match that lit the kerosene under the Occupy Wall Street protests, it certainly didn’t help temper the discussions.
