How do I help employers respond to workplace problems before they turn into litigation?
As employment disputes, at their core, involve people and their relationships with each other, being an effective employment lawyer also sometimes feels like doing double duty as a therapist or a private investigator. Over the years, I have developed a very strong sense of people and what might be driving a dispute, such as a disgruntled employee’s possible motivations or a new human resources director’s comfort levels with difficult decisions. Whether interviewing employees about difficult workplace issues or preparing a nervous witness for testimony, I focus on building trust and gathering the information we need to build the case, or tell the story properly.
Advising employers on workplace investigations, employee discipline and employment law compliance
Katie Campbell provides hands on advice and counsel to employers on a broad range of workplace issues, including discrimination, harassment, retaliation, employee discipline, and termination decisions. She also helps develop policies, employment agreements, and workplace procedures that comply with federal and Oklahoma employment laws such as Title VII, the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Oklahoma Anti-Discrimination Act. When it comes to the advice and counsel portion of her practice, her aim is always the same: to prevent or solve employment related issues before they develop into administrative claims or lawsuits.
Representing employers in agency proceedings, arbitration and employment litigation
Katie regularly represents employers responding to charges filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and other governmental agencies, giving her firsthand insight into how employment claims are investigated before administrative remedies are exhausted and litigation can begin. She helps clients develop the factual record and legal themes at the earliest stages, positioning them for agency proceedings, settlement discussions or trial as a matter progresses. And should a matter progress to litigation, Katie has experience in both arbitration and in the courtroom.
Observing and keenly attuned to changing employment law and enforcement priorities
Employers are impacted not only by legislation and court decisions but also by even subtle shifts in how government agencies investigate and enforce workplace laws. Because Katie regularly handles EEOC matters and claims filed with other government enforcement agencies, she has a strong basis from which to observe potential shifts in agency focus or approach and can then counsel her clients accordingly on any necessary adjustments.
