How do I help clients navigate their most complex business challenges, over the long term?

In my nearly five decades of practicing law, I have guided commercial clients strategically through various economic busts and booms, credit contractions, rising interest rates and their opposites. I’ve learned that good lawyering is not about following a checklist; it comes from practical, real life experience, refusing to cut corners, and conducting oneself in all matters with honesty and integrity.

Structuring smart commercial financing transactions for banks

Over the course of his career, Gary has handled substantial commercial collection matters and a significant number of fraudulent-conveyance cases. Today, much of his practice involves preparing commercial financing documents for banks and their transactions across the United States. His banking relationships often span decades. That continuity reflects an approach grounded in knowing the institution, understanding its business and recognizing the issues that matter before a transaction becomes a problem.

Continuously reinventing himself, and helping clients do so as well

Gary began his career in commercial litigation during the oil bust and banking crisis of the early 1980s. As markets and economic conditions changed, so did his practice: after spending the 1980s unwinding troubled deals, he spent the 1990s helping clients put transactions back together. He has since represented financial institutions and businesses through financings, restructurings, workouts, foreclosures, commercial collections and insolvency matters, building a perspective grounded not in theory, but in seeing firsthand what works—and what does not—when circumstances change.

A career built on judgment, professionalism and respect

Gary has always judged his work by a simple measure: whether his clients believe he has done his job well, and whether his efforts have earned the respect of the judges and lawyers before and with whom he practices. His longstanding client relationships and the record of representative matters he has handled speak to the former. The latter is reflected in the recognition he has received from his professional peers, including his selection for The Best Lawyers in America every year since 1989. That sustained recognition, spanning decades, is one indication of the professional regard his work has consistently commanded.
