How Do I Help Clients Move Complex Transactions Forward?
Transactional work is all about understanding what the client is trying to accomplish and finding the best way to get them there. I enjoy learning how businesses operate, understanding the often subtle financial and legal nuances of each deal, and helping clients close deals with confidence.
Building a versatile transactional practice
In Oklahoma, transactional lawyers often have the opportunity to work across multiple disciplines rather than focusing on a single niche, and Gavin has embraced that breadth. Much of his practice involves banking and finance and commercial real estate, particularly transactions in the oil and gas industry. On any given day, he may be documenting a commercial loan, helping draft purchase and sale or lease agreements, or assisting with pipeline relocation and easement matters for large development projects. He is also expanding his experience in aviation, general corporate matters and mergers and acquisitions.
Bringing a strong financial background to legal work
Before entering the legal profession, Gavin earned both his MBA and a bachelor’s degree in finance, with additional coursework in accounting and energy finance. That background allows him to understand the financial side of transactions, including balance sheets, cash flow statements and the complex business considerations that often drive legal decisions. He enjoys helping clients understand not only what legal documents require, but why particular provisions matter.
Assisting with transactions across multiple jurisdictions
Although licensed in Oklahoma, Gavin regularly works on transactions involving assets located throughout the country. He has experience researching and coordinating legal requirements in multiple states, particularly in connection with oil and gas financing, where collateral may include producing wells and other assets in numerous jurisdictions. He appreciates the attention to detail these matters require and enjoys helping clients bring complex transactions to completion.
Developing a practical approach to personalized client service
As his practice has grown, Gavin has developed a reputation for diligence, responsiveness and clear communication. He understands that clients want practical answers and timely updates, and he makes a point of explaining the reasoning behind legal recommendations so clients can make informed business decisions. He looks forward to continuing to build a broad transactional practice while serving as a reliable resource for clients and colleagues alike.
