How do I help clients with their intellectual property needs?
I enjoy helping clients organize, protect and manage the ideas and innovations they’ve worked hard to build. Intellectual property work appeals to both the analytical and collaborative sides of my personality because it combines technical detail, strategic thinking and close coordination with clients and colleagues. I focus on understanding not just what a client wants to accomplish, but why it matters to them and how we can build processes that support those goals efficiently and effectively.
Protecting IP assets in a range of industries, technologies and markets
Sarah Simpson focuses her practice on intellectual property matters involving patents, trademarks, copyright issues and portfolio management. She works with clients across a broad range of industries and technologies, including those that involve oil and gas chemistries, medical devices, precision agriculture, mechanical systems and industrial processes. With a practice that spans a wide geographic reach, Sarah assists clients with securing and maintaining IP protections both domestically and internationally, coordinating with foreign associates in an array of jurisdictions, including Europe, Asia, Canada and South America.
Managing IP portfolios and transactional matters—with all the right tools
Sarah particularly enjoys the transactional and portfolio management side of IP practice, which require organization, precision and long-term planning. Clients appreciate that she brings all three of those skills, among others, to their matters. Sarah works with clients to maintain patent and trademark portfolios, manage IP assets, and navigate ownership and transfer issues arising in mergers and acquisitions. She also handles IP takedown matters involving online marketplaces and social media platforms, including both responding to and initiating enforcement actions relating to alleged infringement.
Approaching complex issues with curiosity and attention to detail
Known for her detail-oriented and analytical approach, Sarah enjoys diving deeply into complex questions and understanding the reasoning behind legal and strategic decisions rather than relying on formulaic answers. Her scientific background and research experience further strengthen her ability to work through technical subject matters and evolving legal issues, including the growing intersection of intellectual property law and artificial intelligence. Sarah regularly advises clients with concerns involving confidentiality, ownership, inventorship and other emerging questions surrounding AI-related technologies and content.
Building collaborative relationships with clients and colleagues
Sarah places strong emphasis on communication, teamwork and understanding how different people work most effectively. She believes successful client service depends not only on legal knowledge, but also on cultivating collaborative systems that allow teams to work efficiently and thoughtfully together. Clients and colleagues appreciate her organized communication style, responsiveness and ability to explain complicated processes clearly while keeping projects moving forward in a practical and cost-effective manner.
Working across IP and emerging technology issues
In addition to her IP practice, Sarah also assists with related contract drafting and review, data privacy and technology-related matters. She particularly enjoys helping clients understand and address fast-evolving issues where business innovation, technology and legal risk increasingly converge.
