How do I help clients with their intellectual property issues, strategies, and litigation?

I enjoy intellectual property because every day feels a little like watching the Discovery Channel. One day I may be working on lithium extraction technology, the next on industrial combustion systems, artificial intelligence, or a university research project. I make it my goal to understand both the technology itself and the business reasons behind it so I can help clients make strategic decisions that create real-world value.

Exploring emerging technologies and innovation

Shawn Dellegar advises companies, entrepreneurs, universities, manufacturers and others on protecting, managing and maximizing the value of their intellectual property assets. His practice focuses on domestic and international patent and trademark portfolios, patent prosecution, licensing, due diligence, freedom-to-operate analyses and IP strategy.

Helping clients in a wide array of economic sectors and intellectual properties

For more than two decades, Shawn has worked with clients across a remarkably diverse range of technologies and industries. His experience includes critical minerals and lithium extraction, industrial combustion systems, hydrogen fuel technologies, wastewater treatment, image processing, precision agriculture, functional foods, medical devices, advanced manufacturing, and artificial intelligence-related innovations. He also maintains a longstanding relationship with university researchers, helping transform emerging technologies from the laboratory into commercially viable assets.

Understanding technology and business goals from every angle

A former systems analyst and computer programmer, Shawn quickly immerses himself in the technical details behind a client’s innovation. He enjoys learning how technologies work, whether that means understanding complex chemistry, process engineering, software systems, or manufacturing processes. Just as importantly, he seeks to understand the business objectives driving each IP decision. Clients appreciate his ability to evaluate not only whether a patent can be obtained, but also how intellectual property fits into broader goals such as fundraising, market positioning, competitive strategy, licensing opportunities and long-term growth.

Developing global IP strategies

Shawn’s practice extends well beyond the United States. He regularly coordinates patent and trademark filings throughout Europe, Asia, Latin America, and other international markets, helping clients develop worldwide protection strategies tailored to their industries and commercial objectives. His international experience also includes collaborating with foreign law firms that rely on him to manage U.S. patent matters for their clients. This global perspective allows Shawn to help businesses navigate the increasingly interconnected IP landscape while balancing protection cost, and business priorities.

Providing practical and business-focused counsel

Many of Shawn’s clients view him as an extension of their internal team. He frequently serves as outside intellectual property counsel, advising on portfolio development, licensing agreements, infringement concerns, patent validity issues and ongoing IP management. He helps clients evaluate where IP investments create meaningful value and where a more focused approach may be appropriate. His practical mindset allows him to align legal strategies with business realities rather than pursuing IP protection for its own sake.

Building relationships through communication and trust

Known for his approachable style and ability to explain complex issues clearly, Shawn works comfortably with scientists, engineers, executives, entrepreneurs, investors, and in-house counsel alike. He believes effective intellectual property counsel requires more than technical knowledge; it requires understanding people, listening carefully, and helping clients make informed decisions.
